Growing up on a farm near Griffith, Bethany always knew she wanted a career helping others. As the eldest of five children, caring for people came naturally, and today she is pursuing her goal of becoming a Registered Nurse through Charles Sturt University. Through hands-on experience as an Assistant in Nursing and the support of the Country Universities Centre Western Riverina (CUC), Bethany is building the skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career in healthcare.

Why did you choose to study nursing?

I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. During school I completed a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) as an Assistant in Nursing, which gave me the opportunity to work in both a hospital and aged care setting. Those experiences confirmed that helping and caring for others is what I love to do.

How has studying through the CUC helped you?

Studying through the CUC has made university much more achievable, especially living in a regional area. When I first started, there was so much about university that I didn’t know. The staff helped me understand the process and have supported me every step of the way.

How has Charles Sturt University supported your studies?

As an online student, Charles Sturt provides flexible learning options, accessible resources, and supportive staff. This has made it easier to succeed in my degree while balancing other commitments and living regionally.

What would you say to someone considering studying with Charles Sturt?

I would say that Charles Sturt is very supportive and flexible. The learning resources are easy to access, and the university makes it easier to balance study with work and personal activities.

How are you balancing work, study and life?

I feel like I’m balancing everything well. Sometimes it can be overwhelming, but so far I’ve been able to manage my study and work commitments without any major issues.

How is your degree preparing you for your future career?

My studies have prepared me through clinical placements, practical learning experiences and intensive schools. I’ve developed communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills that will be essential as a Registered Nurse.

What are your career goals?

My goal is to work as a Registered Nurse in a hospital environment. I’d also love the opportunity to travel and experience different hospitals and healthcare settings. In the future, I hope to continue my studies and specialise in an area of nursing that interests me.
