After working as an electrician for nine years, Gerald began looking for ways to expand his skills and knowledge in the electrical field. With a young family and full-time work in Griffith, relocating or committing to university study wasn’t a practical option. Instead, he enrolled in the Diploma of Electrical Engineering through TAFE Digital, a post-trade course that aligned with both his professional goals and personal circumstances.

The flexibility of online learning allowed Gerald to continue working locally while remaining close to his family. However, studying independently presented its own challenges, especially with a self-guided learning structure and the need to attend residential schools in Sydney. Staying motivated and finding a suitable study environment at home proved difficult.

That’s where CUC Western Riverina made a significant difference. Gerald relied on the Centre throughout his course. The quiet, well-equipped study space at CUC provided the structure and resources he needed to stay focused. From access to high-speed internet and modern technology to the supportive environment created by the Centre, Gerald credits much of his academic progress to having a dedicated space outside the home. His workplace also supported his study journey, offering time off when needed to help him meet assessment deadlines and prepare for practical components.

Completing the diploma was a major achievement, especially given the course’s low completion rate. He encourages others not to delay starting their study journey. Taking that first step can lead to new opportunities, even while balancing work and family.
