“I honestly would not have been as successful with my degree had it not been for the friendly faces and outstanding facilities that are provided through the CUC. From the quiet study spaces, to academic support, to the kitchenette, the whole experience has been beneficial as a regional university student.”

Why did you choose your degree and what did you enjoy the most about it?

With a passion for nurturing the minds that will shape our future, I chose teaching to provide children with the same guidance and support that I was given throughout my schooling career. I enjoyed the practical application of my knowledge through undergoing placements at various schools across different states, solidifying my love for the profession.

How important was having the CUC in your local town to you and why?

Having access to a centre in a town that is absent of a university was pivotal in allowing me to deeply engage with my course material. Having spent the first three years of my degree studying in the city, I initially struggled not having my university’s resources when moving back to my regional hometown. After registering at the local CUC, I was able to reengage with my studies in an environment that mirrored the support and structure provided by my university.

Were there any specific challenges that you faced as an online regional student? How did the CUC help you to overcome these challenges?

Being so disconnected from the physical resources and in-person support I was receiving while studying on campus, the staff at the CUC ensured that any queries of mine and access to any materials and academic information were of high priority. Additionally, living on a property out of town, the Centre ensured access to reliable internet connection and quiet study spaces to complete assignments, exams and course material.

Are you still living in a regional town and what do you love about it?

I currently reside in the regional town I grew up in and the strong sense of connection and community is something that was notably absent while living in the city. Knowing that I have people who support me and encourage me to succeed has provided me with the reassurance I’ve needed to persevere through the more challenging periods of my degree.

Where are you working now and what do you like about it? Is your career path what you originally intended?

I am currently working for the NSW Department of Education teaching in a school for specific purposes. I appreciate the opportunities it has provided in strengthening my teaching abilities and building my confidence as an educator. Completing a Bachelor of Education, I knew the end goal was teaching in schools. However, I had not originally intended to teach while completing the final year of my studies. The knowledge that I have acquired through this period has been instrumental in promoting the progression of my career.

What advice would you give to other regional and rural people who are considering higher education?

Naturally, anything new and unfamiliar can be extremely daunting. However, the amount of resources and guidance that is accessible to university students today ensures that you are supported throughout every step of the journey. I encourage regional and rural people to reach out to individuals in the community who have undergone a similar pathway as hearing from the lived experiences of people around you provides clarity and eases any anxiety around this huge leap.
