Were there any benefits to studying online and working at the same time?

Studying online provided the opportunity to take my time management and organisation skills to the next level! Studying full-time and working full-time wasn’t a simple lifestyle. However, the experience was rewarding, and I would not change my journey. In essence, online study provided the flexibility to choose when and how I studied, meaning I could maintain an 8 to 5 job. I also found that because I had limited time during the weekdays to study, I became more accountable for my learning, intentional with my time, and had clear direction with my goals as a student. I also stuck by the notion that even though I could not “make extra time” each day, I had the power and ability to “find time”.

Did you face any challenges studying online?

Being an online student is a challenging mode to learn. However, if you use the resources and support offered, it is effective, and I would choose this method again. The main challenge I faced was as a first-year student, trying to adjust to the expectations of university standards and learning how to manage my time in online exams. Another aspect of online study, which was a struggle at first, was making meaningful connections with my peers. Even if you attended an online class or completed a group assessment, after completing the activities, you revert to studying or learning in isolation and lack social interactions.

How did the CUC help you in your higher education journey?

The challenges presented when studying online where able to be managed by becoming a CUC Western Riverina student. Registering was one of the best decisions to support my online studies, as the Centre provided me with more than academic advice. It offered a safe and supportive environment to conduct my studies, where I had year-round access. From the friendly and encouraging staff to the accessibility and location, I felt motivated to study three trimesters yearly as I could rely on the Centre’s support. There were excellent networking opportunities and the ability to interact with like-minded students.

If you had one piece of advice for a student starting higher education, what would it be?

University provides you with an opportunity to apply yourself and strive to be a better learner. View studying at university as a new chapter in your education story. Even if your prior education journey had its challenges, don’t let those experiences cloud your judgment to pursue higher education. Play to your strengths, but also, don’t be afraid to take on a challenge if you have the drive.
