Why did you choose your field of study?

My journey to studying a Bachelor of Human Services has been anything but straightforward – it’s been a long road. Since starting my educational journey in 2014, I’ve completed a Diploma of Nursing and pursued a Bachelor of Nursing focusing on maternity and paediatrics. I spent over two years working in the nursing field while studying, and my experiences with disability support and complex medical conditions opened my eyes to significant gaps in our support systems. I saw firsthand how families and individuals struggled to navigate these systems and access the needed services. This realisation ignited my passion for community work and led me to enrol in a Bachelor of Social Work. However, with the arrival of my young family and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, completing the necessary placement hours and intensive schools became unmanageable. After speaking with my university career advisor, I discovered a pathway I hadn’t seen before – the Bachelor of Human Services with a focus on child welfare. This degree allows me to pursue my passion while maintaining flexibility, and after graduation, I plan to complete my Master’s to achieve social work accreditation.

Why did you register with the CUC?

The CUC Western Riverina stood out because it welcomes students from all universities and provides the kind of support and community that’s hard to find elsewhere. CUC genuinely understands the challenges regional students face and offers a space where I feel supported in my educational journey.

Share with us some of your proudest moments as a student.

One of my proudest moments was achieving my first High Distinction, not just for both assignments, but for the overall subject! This was especially meaningful because it was a subject I hadn’t done well in previously. My HD success was made possible thanks to the incredible support I received from Maddi at CUC. In the first few weeks of the session, I struggled to understand the law and ethics concepts we were learning. Maddi guided me on how to approach subject matter and pointed me to where I could find the relevant information. Her guidance gave me the confidence and clarity to tackle the assignment and conduct thorough research. That support made all the difference, and I’ll always be grateful for her dedication and patience.

What advice would you give to other regional and rural people who are considering higher education?

Never give up on your ambitions! There’s always an alternative route to success, even if the path seems challenging. With determination, support, and a willingness to adapt, you can achieve your educational and career goals.
